2019 yılında
kurulan Batman Üniversitesi İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı Anabilim Dalı, verdiği İngilizce
lisans eğitimiyle Türkiye’deki yeni kurulan Anabilim Dallarından biridir. Bölümümüz
şu anda birinci sınıf ve hazırlıkta olmak üzere, yaklaşık olarak 40 öğrenciden
oluşmaktadır ve önümüzdeki yıllarda bölümümüzden, her yıl olmak üzere, ortalama 30-40 mezun olacaktır.
Bölüme başvurmak
için, öğrencilerin ÖSYM’nin hazırladığı üniversite giriş sınavlarından başarılı
olmaları gerekmektedir. İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümünü kazanan öğrenciler,
Yabancı Diller Yüksek Okulu tarafından düzenlenen muafiyet sınavını geçtikleri
taktirde birinci sınıf derslerini almaya hak kazanırlar. Söz konusu sınavda
başarılı olamayan öğrenciler, bir yıl süresince Hazırlık sınıfında eğitim
alırlar.
Eğitimlerinin ilk
yılında öğrenciler “Advanced Grammar” (İleri Dilbilgisi), “Literary Concepts”
(Edebi Kavramlar), “Survey of English Literature” (İngiliz Edebiyatına Giriş)
gibi temel dersleri alırlar. İkinci yıllarında öğrenciler çeviri, dilbilim,
seçmeli yabancı diller, edebi türler, İngiliz Edebiyatının önemli dönemleri ve
İngiliz Romanı, İngiliz Düzyazı ve Şiiri ile tanışırlar.
Üçüncü ve dördüncü
sınıflarda ise edebiyat, dilbilim ve eğitsel yöntemler üzerine eleştirel bakış
açısı kazanmaya yönlendirilip derslerde kendilerine verilen metinler üzerine
düşüncelerini, yorumlarını ve gözlemlerini paylaşmaya teşvik edilirler. Ayrıca,
öğrencilerin ilgi alanlarına göre seçebilecekleri geniş bir seçmeli ders
yelpazesi bulunmaktadır. Dört yıllık eğitimlerinin ardından, öğrenciler
edebiyat çalışmalarının sağladığı disiplinler arası bakış açısı sayesinde
yalnızca metinlere eleştirel gözle bakmayı öğrenmekle kalmayıp, aynı zamanda
çok farklı kariyerler için de beceriler geliştirirler. Bölüm mezunları
İngilizce öğretmenliği, çevirmenlik, turizm, dış ticaret, bankacılık, medya ve
basın gibi alanlarda çalışma olanağı bulurlar.

Founded in 2019, the Department of English Language
and Literature at Batman University is one of the newly opened English
departments in Turkey that offers, for the time being, undergraduate (BA)
degree in English. The department is currently home to approximately 40
undergraduate students in the first year and the preparatory year of their
study, and around 30-40 students will graduate from the department at the end
of each academic year in the following years.
To enroll for a BA at the department, candidates are
required to take the exams offered by ÖSYM. Once admitted, to meet the English
language requirement of the department, students must take the English
proficiency exam run by the School of Foreign Languages or submit a score
obtained in an internationally recognised English language test. If students
are unable to meet the language requirement, they must complete the English
language preparatory programme offered by the School of Foreign Languages.
During their first year of study, students take
introductory courses such as Advanced Grammar, British Culture, Literary
Concepts, and Survey of English Literature. These courses are designed to equip
them with the necessary tools to begin to think, speak and write critically
about literature. In the second year, students are introduced to such courses
of translation, linguistics, elective foreign languages and literary genres, periods
of English Literature an English Novel, English Poetry and Prose, Translation, Linguistics,
Semantics, French, German.
In the third and fourth years students are encouraged
to think critically about literature, language, linguistics and educational
methodology, materials and are left to tackle texts autonomously and share
their opinions and comments during lectures. The department also offers a wide
range of elective courses providing undergraduates the opportunity to focus on
topics of their interest. At the end of their four years of study, through the
interdisciplinary perspective literary studies provide, students will not only
have a vision necessary to respond to texts critically, but also achieve skills
for a wide range of careers. Possible job opportunities upon graduation include
English teaching, translation, working in the sectors of tourism, foreign trade,
banking, media and press, foreign embassies and consulates. Graduates may also
pursue postgraduate education in English and American Studies, Comparative
Literature, Translation and Interpreting, Film Studies besides other areas of
humanities such as Women’s Studies. Additionally, BA graduates have the
opportunity to continue their studies in various disciplines of the Social
Sciences such as International Relations, Politics, Economy, Communication and
Media Studies.
The medium of instruction is 100 % English.
